The compulsion for territorial growth, conquest, and domination is as old as history itself. The techniques in which the impulse has expressed itself, however, reveal wide variations. Imperialism is a method based on military conquest, occupation of territory, and direct governmental/military control by the dominant imperial power (National Academies Press, 2002). Such characterization audibly applies to the classical Roman, Ottoman, Spanish, and Soviet empires. Imperial powers are also dominant economically, but the techniques entailed extraction and exploitation of resources via the process of expropriation, direct control of economic activities, & coercion (slavery in some cases)
